Statement by the Chairwoman, 4 March 2022
On behalf of the West-Eastern Encounters Foundation, I reiterate our strong condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This aggression is contrary to international law and cannot be justified. We extend our unreserved solidarity and sympathy to those suffering in Ukraine.
Supporting and promoting peaceful cooperation with the people in the West-Eastern Encounters Foundation’s 15 partner countries is central to its work. Over the years, we have developed close and successful relations with our partners in the Foundation’s partner countries, including Russia and Belarus. We stand in solidarity with all those who condemn the war and Russian military violence.
Current developments are also impacting the Foundation’s work on West-Eastern encounters with Russia and Belarus. Until further notice, the Foundation will adhere to the guidelines issued by the Federal Government and the Federal Foreign Office regarding its funding programmes for social cooperation with Russia and Belarus. Specifically, this means suspending cooperation with state structures and political decision-makers. The Foundation is examining its own and funded civil society projects with Russia and Belarus to see whether they can be implemented. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Foundation.
We call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to the negotiating table.

Declaration on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, 25 February 2022
We strongly condemn Russia’s use of military force against Ukraine. War is not a solution to political conflicts and represents a significant setback for international cooperation. We stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people and urge all those responsible to return to the negotiating table. In light of Russia’s aggression, we are more convinced than ever that encounters and dialogue within civil society are the foundation of international understanding and peaceful coexistence. This conviction will always guide the Foundation in its work.
